A big thank you to Southport International Short Film Festival for selecting Approval Needed!

Delighted to have good news during this grim and isolating time of Coronavirus. This year marks the first Southport International Short Film Festivals so it’s quite sad that they have been forced to run the festival online – for obvious reasons – but on the positive side that means anyone, anywhere in world can “go along” to see our film amongst the many other wonderful shorts on offer.

The festival runs 26th – 28th June 2020, and Approval Needed will screen in Drama Program Four on Sunday 28th, starting at 3pm. Tickets for the whole festival are just £5 and are available here: Eventbrite.

In the film Amita has quite a number of origami peace cranes on her dressing table – they are hard to see but were made with love and, scattered amongst fairy lights, they really set the right atmosphere when we were shooting that scene. So, in homage to Amita and her resilient character, I’ve always made cranes to take or send to all the film festivals that have screened our film. They make a sweet little gift of good karma for people int he audience to take away afterwards.

Approval Needed was made as a small but meaningful protest against the rising intolerance and racism we’ve seen in the UK since the Brexit vote, and sadly its relevance has grown rather than diminished over time. We are very grateful that it continues to find an audience and love out there in the world, so despite this festival being online I spent some of today making origami cranes to send to the organisers – perhaps they will bring a little joy and maybe even find their way into the hands of next year’s audience.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to making Approval Needed such a successful and beautiful little film,

much love and wishing you all peace, good health and happier times ahead,

Karen x
